Union Jack (more correctly Union Flag) is a term used for the flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The flag originally consists of the English red St. George’s cross on white background and the Scottish diagonal white cross on blue background. The flag has been in use since the beginning of the 17th century.
In 1801 the flag incorporated the Irish St. Patrick’s cross, a diagonal red cross on white background and the flag became the one we know today.
The term Union Jack is widespread, although it is not quite correct. The word jack refers to a long narrow streamer that usually flies on top of the tallest mast of a sailer.
Metaphorically, Union Jack can also refer to British territory outside the British Isles.
